New certified mobile controller for more functional safety in mobile machinery
Jul 31, 2024
Mobile machines look back on a history that has spanned many centuries. Did you know, for example, that the first crane was built by the ancient Greeks as early as 500 BC? Mankind has been inventive and has enriched the world of mobile machinery over time with many other technical achievements: from the first agricultural machines, to the steam-powered machines of the industrial revolution, to today's highly digitalized and connected machines.
Functional safety technology on mobile machinery in general has also come a long way. Actually, we have even given this 21st century functional safety a name: trueSafety!
A look at functional safety of mobile machines
Functional safety refers to the reliable performance of a system's safety functions. As a result, we speak of functional safety when an electrical or electronic protection system fulfills its function in an emergency. It is intended to significantly limit possible risks by avoiding systematic faults, detecting random faults and reacting to detected faults.
In logistics, in the energy sector and in industry in general, machinery and plants are used which, for all of their advantages, can cause a great deal of damage. People, the environment and the machines themselves must be protected from these dangers.
This is done by safety systems which, depending on the hazard level, have to work very reliably and securely. Typical safety functions are emergency shutdowns for overloads or monitoring of dangerous movements.
A quick view on functional safety standards in the machine sector
The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is the base for functional safety in the machinery sector within the EU.
The most important standards in the machinery sector are:
- DIN EN ISO 13849: Safety of machinery – Safety-related components of control systems
- DIN EN/IEC 62061: Safety of machinery – Functional safety of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems
- DIN EN/IEC 61508: Functional safety of safety-related electrical/electronic/programmable electronic systems
trueSafety – the WIKA Mobile Control safety Standard
trueSafety is the WIKA Mobile Control definition for integrated safety from one source – and more flexibility and economic efficiency for our customers. Together with you, WIKA Mobile Control safety experts look into the relevant standards and requirements, and thus offer expertise and services for product and system certification.
This process guarantees high availability and topmost functional safety for mobile machines. WIKA Mobile Control offers extensive consulting services as well as a comprehensive portfolio of safety components and systems for functional safety – including the brand new safety controllers of the CTL-S700 series.
The CTL-S700 series – our latest trueSafety controllers
trueSafety controllers of the CTL-S700 series enable high-level safety for mobile machines. Especially developed for the demanding tasks of mobile machines, the user is offered countless application possibilities. These controllers are ready for use in safety-critical applications according to IEC 61508:2010 SIL 2, ISO 13849-1:2015 PL d and IEC 62061:2015 SIL 2 and offers many interfaces and I/Os for safety-relevant machine control tasks.
Boasting an 300 MHz Aurix TC299TX processor, up to 64 MB flash, 2.7 MB SRAM and 32 kB FRAM, controllers of the CTL-S700 series bring the computing power that complex applications need. Programming is realized by CoDeSys 3.5 SIL 2. With its 64MB Flash and its real-time clock (RTC), the CTL-S 701 offers sufficient memory for data recording or storing parameter data. Multiple CANopen safety and Ethernet interfaces are available. The CTL-S700 series offers up to 64 inputs and 56 outputs which allow the controller to network well in the system.
With an IP66/67 protection rating, a robust aluminum cast housing and high shock- and vibration-resistance, controllers from the CTL-S700 series are equipped for use in harsh environments. This makes these safety controllers of the CTL-S700 series a perfect fit for mobile machines of all kinds, e.g. mobile cranes, aerial working platforms, telehandlers or forestry machines.
